From the fall of print media to COVID-19, we discuss the industry’s most immediate challenges

Falmouth Flexible’s Kate de Pury (MA Journalism Course Co-Leader) sat down for a chat with Tom Kent (Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University) about sustainable, high quality journalism.

A former Associated Press Standards Editor, Tom shares his thoughts on several pressing topics in journalism today. He explores how newspapers’ reluctant shifts to digital have been jolted into fast motion by the Coronavirus lockdowns – and how disinformation across the online sphere is as omnipresent an issue as ever.

Further into the conversation, Tom and Kate navigate the pitfalls of shiny object syndrome, particularly how investing in new technology without first making wider considerations can do more damage than good. Their discussion also moves to cover the lack of connect between journalists and their reader. Tom dissects how this lack of understanding results in writing that doesn’t relate to the people it aims to serve.

In addition to the above, Tom and Kate also delve into the necessity of diversity across publications, advertising in the digital sphere, and more ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Listen to the full conversation below.
